Volkswagen Academy collaborates with Symbiosis Skills and Open University to create future Team Leaders



Volkswagen Academy collaborated with Symbiosis Skills and Open University (SSOU), Pune, to create a unique module for its workmen who have been promoted as front level supervisors with the aim to mould them into future team leaders. These supervisors who are based out of the Volkswagen Pune Plant in Chakan would be able to opt for this programme. The focus of the module will revolve around bridging the gap between formal diploma education and actual competency possessing of the participants by developing business communication skills, better in-depth understanding of organizational and manufacturing systems, etc. Symbiosis Skills and Open University is Maharashtra’s first skill development university, which offers unique features in its programmes including – multi-entry exit, recognition of prior learning, credit transfer, etc., making re-skilling more attractive.

 The module will entail Basic Technological Competence, Basic Managerial Competence and Basic Behavioural Competence. For the inaugural programme, Volkswagen Academy is aiming to enrol 16 employees with further more employees to be enrolled in the subsequent phase. The programme will be a weekend programme and will begin from April 15, 2018. The total duration of this course will be one year.

Dr. Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Ltd., along with Dr. Swati Mujumdar, Pro-Chancellor, Symbiosis Skills and Open University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect on April 4, 2018 at the Symbiosis Skills and Open University.

Dr. Andreas Lauermann said: “This is our way of recognising talent within Volkswagen and giving them an opportunity to grow personally and professionally in their careers. The programme will recognize the need-gaps of these specific individuals and work towards building managerial capabilities in order to take them to the next level. The Symbiosis Skills and Open University has been extremely supportive in working with us to create this unique module that is aligned to a larger purpose of skill building in the automotive industry.” He further added: “This programme aligns directly with our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Skill India initiative.”

Dr. Swati Mujumdar said: “This is a very unique programme that has been co-created by Volkswagen Academy and SSOU. The programme provides a perfect platform for those looking to develop professionally and personally. The programme is in line with the university’s vision to deliver skill knowledge at various levels and focus on skill India mission. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Volkswagen India and Volkswagen Academy for coming forward with this novel initiative.”

Volkswagen India set up the Volkswagen Academy in 2013. The Academy provides technical and non-technical training solutions to Volkswagen Group and its channel partners. In addition, the goal was to meet the training demand of various brands of Volkswagen Group for qualified work force and to create ready pool of industry professionals. The Academy also runs a unique Technical Apprentice Program (VG-TAP). This is to create quality talent pool for the automobile industry and also supplement recruitment at dealership level.

The Volkswagen Group is represented by five passenger car brands in India: Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, ŠKODA, and Volkswagen. The group has been present in India for the last 15 years and began its India journey with the entry of the ŠKODA brand in 2001. The Audi brand and Volkswagen brand entered India in 2007, while Porsche brand and Lamborghini brand followed in 2012. Each brand has its own character and operates as an independent entity in the market. Volkswagen Group India has about 30 models in India about 240 dealerships and is operating two plants – Pune and Aurangabad. The Pune Plant has a manufacturing capacity of 200,000 cars per year (maximum in three-shift system) and is currently manufacturing Volkswagen Polo, Ameo and Vento and ŠKODA Rapid. The Aurangabad Plant assembles various premium and luxury models of Audi, ŠKODA and Volkswagen sold in India and has an annual maximum capacity of approximately 89,000. Volkswagen Group India is a part of Volkswagen AG, which is globally represented by 13 brands - Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Ducati, Lamborghini, Porsche, Scania, SEAT, ŠKODA, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, MAN, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and MOIA.

SSOU is India’s pioneering and Maharashtra’s first skill development University. Its vision is to create a model place of learning where students and working professionals can obtain knowledge and skills relevant to the industry and useful to the society. Its campus is located near Pune Mumbai Expressway, in Kiwale. The university has world class infrastructure comprising specialized skill training labs and centers of excellence established in collaboration with industry The University offers sector specific engineering, management, science and architecture programs besides short-term courses.
