Royal Enfield launches the limited edition ‘Classic 500 Pegasus’ motorcycle

The oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production, Royal Enfield, launched the Classic 500 ‘Pegasus’ limited edition motorcycle. The ‘Pegasus’ is inspired by the legendary RE/WD Flying Flea 125 motorcycle that was manufactured at Royal Enfield’s underground facility in Westwood, UK, during the World War II. Conceived as a tribute the Flying Flea and Royal Enfield’s military heritage, the Classic 500 Pegasus is a chance to own a piece of motorcycle history with only 1,000 units available globally, of which 190 will be available in the UK. The motorcycle will be available to be booked online starting July, and will be priced at GBP 4999 (On the road).

Royal Enfield has a proud and enduring history of military manufacturing, as the motto ‘Made Like a Gun Since 1901’ suggests. Royal Enfield produced munitions, artillery equipment and motorcycles during both World Wars and supplies the Indian armed forces with motorcycles to the present day. Royal Enfield was called upon during World War I to supply motorcycles to the British armed forces and also for the Imperial Russian Government, and continues to make simple, authentic, classic motorcycles till today. But by far its most storied wartime creation was the airborne troops’ ‘Flying Flea’, a compact and capable, two-stroke 125cc motorcycle that saw action in some of greatest battles of World War II, including D-Day and Arnhem.

“The story of the Flying Flea is both remarkable and inspiring, and it has a history like no other motorcycle. Rugged military motorcycles have been an integral part of Royal Enfield’s heritage and continues to be till date, as we endeavour to build classic, simple, enduring motorcycles. Our machines have played important role in both World Wars, earning a reputation for endurance in the toughest conditions. The Classic 500 Pegasus is a homage to the legendary war stories and to the resilience and pedigree of Royal Enfield”, said Siddhartha Lal, CEO, Royal Enfield.

Known for their ruggedness, Royal Enfield motorcycles served with British troops in France and Belgium during World War I and were supplied to the Imperial Russian Army. In World War II, tens of thousands of Royal Enfield motorcycles were shipped to almost every theatre of conflict. But the Flying Flea was the only proper motorcycle to be dropped successfully behind enemy lines with paratroopers, with the War Department ordering more than 4,000.

Simple, tough and resilient, the Flying Flea (or WD/RE to use its official title) was deployed extensively as a front line combat machine. An invaluable asset to the elite soldiers of the newly-formed Parachute Regiment, it was dropped by parachute in a protective steel cradle or carried in Horsa assault gliders. On the ground, it was used for reconnaissance, communications and carrying soldiers into battle.

The versatile little Royal Enfield proved itself in September 1944's Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history. A daring Allied attempt to shorten the war by entering Germany from Holland over a series of captured bridges, it culminated in the Battle of Arnhem where besieged and outnumbered paratroopers held out against German tank divisions for seven days, in an incredible show of grit and determination. Beset with problems including broken radio sets, commanders relied on the Flying Flea to carry messages. Its strength and go-anywhere handling made the rugged and versatile Flying Flea almost unstoppable. Confronted with a fence or a ditch, the rider could simply dismount and lift the bike over.

“Despatch riders went to headquarters at Oosterbeek Town Hall from the detachments,” remembers Arnhem veteran John Jeffries. “They used to be buzzing around from all over.” Motorcycle enthusiast John, who parachuted into Holland with the 4th Parachute Brigade, has fond memories of the Flying Flea. “I liked that motorcycle. They were a lovely size. I always judged a motorcycle by its weight and the Royal Enfield was just my type”.

The Flying Flea played a different but just as vital role on D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history. As the Allies fought to establish a beachhead in Normandy, Northern France, in preparation for the invasion of German-occupied Western Europe, hundreds of Flying Fleas and James ML motorcycles streamed from landing craft on to the beaches.

Speaking about the Flying Flea’s role during the D-Day operation, Gordon May, Royal Enfield historian, says: “The ramp would touch down and out would come the motorcycles. They were used as a means of rounding up troops and getting them forward and also accompanying troops much as a convoy escort rider would have done.” D-Day’s commanding officers later praised the lightweight motorcycles and their riders, known as ‘beachmasters’, for their part in the landings' success.

Conceived as a tribute the Flying Flea and Royal Enfield’s military heritage, the Classic 500 Pegasus is a chance to own a piece of motorcycle history. Just 1,000 units will be made available: 190 on sale in the UK and 810 for the rest of the world.

To celebrate the Flea and reveal its fascinating untold tale, Royal Enfield officially teamed up with the British Army's Parachute Regiment. Mark Wells, Royal Enfield’s Head of Global Product Strategy and Industrial Design explains: “It was really important to work closely with the Ministry of Defence, so we approached the Parachute Regiment about 18 months ago and said we’d like work together on a project and the collaboration has been great. These new Classic 500 Pegasus motorcycles encapsulate a lot of the history and legacy of Royal Enfield. This is something only Royal Enfield could have done. Many brands have military motorcycles in their past but only Royal Enfield has the Flying Flea.”

Each of the 1000 new Classic 500 Pegasus motorcycles wears a maroon and blue Pegasus emblem – the official Parachute Regiment insignia – on the fuel tank along with an individual stencilled serial number. The famous Royal Enfield ‘Made Like a Gun’ decal on the battery box is another reminder of the machine’s heritage. The Pegasus motorcycles’ markings are based on a genuine World War II Flying Flea used by the 250th (Airborne) Light Company, now in Royal Enfield’s official collection at the company’s UK Technology Centre. The new motorcycles will be painted in the wartime colours of Service Brown and Olive Drab Green, except in India, where only Service Brown will be available.

An array of Gear, inspired by this decorated motorcycling legacy, are also going to be available. Ranging from shirts, t-shirts, caps, lapel pins, bags and helmets, the limited-production apparels & accessories of this collection are also adorned by the official military insignia & the Pegasus emblem.

Each of these highly desirable limited edition motorcycle comes with a bespoke set of military-style canvas panniers bearing the Pegasus logo. Each motorcycle will have authentic markings of military motorcycles, including brown handlebar grips, a leather strap with brass buckles across the air filter, blacked out silencers, rims, kickstart, pedals and headlight bezel to complete the period look. In addition, consumers can also buy a range of Genuine Motorcycle Accessories that are compatible with the motorcycle.

LANXESS raises its guidance for fiscal year 2018 after strong first quarter

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has followed up its successful fiscal year 2017 by posting the best quarterly result in its history, and has raised its earnings guidance for 2018.
In the opening quarter, global sales rose by almost 7 per cent to EUR 2.565 billion, compared with EUR 2.401 billion in the previous year. EBITDA pre exceptionals improved significantly by 14 per cent to EUR 375 million, compared with EUR 328 million in the prior-year quarter. Key factors in this positive performance chiefly included the contributions of the Chemtura businesses acquired in 2017. In addition, the phosphorus chemicals business purchased from Solvay in February 2018 made its first contribution. Negative currency effects curbed the positive EBITDA performance. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals was up by almost one percentage point on the previous year at 14.6 per cent. Net income improved significantly by 23 per cent to EUR 96 million, compared with EUR 78 million the year before.

“LANXESS remains firmly on the track. We have made a dynamic start to the new fiscal year and improved our profitability again. This shows that our efforts to move the company forwards are increasingly paying off,” said Matthias Zachert, Chairman of the LANXESS Board of Management.

The Group has raised its guidance for fiscal year 2018, and now expects EBITDA pre exceptionals to increase by between 5 per cent and 10 per cent for the “New LANXESS” segments (Advanced Intermediates, Specialty Additives, Performance Chemicals and Engineering Materials). In the previous year, comparable EBITDA pre exceptionals stood at around EUR 925 million. At the annual press conference in March, Zachert envisaged only a slight increase for the year as a whole. The ARLANXEO segment, a joint venture between LANXESS and Saudi Aramco for synthetic rubber, is not included in the guidance for 2018, and will be reported separately from the second quarter onwards.

Sound business development in the segments

Sales of the Advanced Intermediates segment came to EUR 563 million in the first quarter of 2018, 8.7 per cent above the prior-year figure of EUR 518 million. EBITDA pre exceptionals increased by 12.1 per cent to EUR 102 million compared with EUR 91 million a year earlier, largely as a result of adjusted selling prices. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals amounted to 18.1 per cent, against 17.6 per cent in the previous year.

In the Specialty Additives segment, sales totalled EUR 496 million, more than double the EUR 239 million generated in the same quarter of the previous year. EBITDA pre exceptionals amounted to EUR 81 million, up 84.1 per cent on the prior-year level of EUR 44 million. This strong earnings performance chiefly results from the integration of the purchased Chemtura businesses. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals was 16.3 per cent, below the 18.4 per cent recorded in the previous year.

In the Performance Chemicals segment, sales fell by 8.7 per cent to EUR 336 million in the first quarter of 2018, against EUR 368 million in the previous year. EBITDA pre exceptionals amounted to EUR 52 million, down 11.9 per cent on the prior-year level of EUR 59 million. In particular, negative currency effects and the divestment of the chlorine dioxide business reduced sales and earnings. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals amounted to 15.5 per cent, against 16.0 per cent in the same period of the previous year.

Sales in the Engineering Materials segment rose by a considerable 24.8 per cent to EUR 393 million, compared with EUR 315 million in the same quarter of the previous year. EBITDA pre exceptionals increased even stronger – by more than 50 per cent to EUR 73 million, compared with EUR 48 million. The improvement in earnings resulted from higher selling prices, the contribution from the urethanes business acquired in the previous year, and higher capacity utilization. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals of 18.6 per cent was well above the figure of 15.2 per cent attained in the same quarter of the previous year.

At EUR 757 million, sales in the ARLANXEO segment were 20.1 per cent down on the very strong figure of EUR 948 million for the same quarter of the previous year. EBITDA pre exceptionals fell by 22.9 per cent to EUR 111 million compared with EUR 144 million in the previous year, largely as a result of adverse currency effects. The EBITDA margin pre exceptionals amounted to 14.7 per cent, against 15.2 per cent a year earlier.

Ford introduces Sunroof on All-New EcoSport; presents Trendier & Sportier EcoSport S & Signature Edition

In its commitment to bring products, technologies and features that Indian customers want and value, Ford India recently announced the expansion of EcoSport model line-up with a new top-of-the-line EcoSport S and Signature Edition.

Donning trendier and sportier cues, both the new variants will come equipped with power slide sunroof, rechristened as fun roof. Strengthening its petrol & fun-to-drive credentials, EcoSport S has been paired with Ford’s award-winning 1.0L EcoBoost engine to woo driving enthusiasts.

“In line with our Feels like Family Promise, we are committed to meeting diverse needs of our customers and act on their feedback. The addition of Sunroof, a feature that customers have been demanding, and world-renowned EcoBoost engine technology, is an example of our commitment,” said Anurag Mehrotra, President and Managing Director at Ford India. “Driven by customer feedback, the two new editions make our compact SUV even more stylish, trendier and fun-to-drive.”

Spirited EcoSport S

The newly introduced top-of-the-line, EcoSport S variant, is replete with smart exterior changes that enhance the compact SUV’s imposing stance. It introduces all-new smoked HID headlamps with dark inserts and a more prominent black treatment to the fog lamp bezel.

The dark theme has been carried all through the exterior design with a blacked out grille, black painted roof & roof rails and 17-inch smoke alloys for a more noticeable road presence.

The interiors of the EcoSport S feature orange accents on the seats as well as instrument panel to break the monotony and add to the cabin’s premium appeal.

For enhanced driver convenience, EcoSport S introduces a new, bigger 4.2-inch digital information cluster along with the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Strengthening the petrol line-up, the EcoSport S will be paired to Ford’s globally renowned 1.0L EcoBoost engine, delivering class-leading 125 PS of peak power and 170 Nm of torque to further enhance the compact SUV’s fun-to-drive credentials.

Not just fun-to-drive, EcoBoost will stay true to its promise of being extremely efficient, offering a fuel economy of 18.1 km/l and 12% lower CO2 emissions than conventional four-cylinder engines. It will be mated to an all-new six-speed manual transmission that offers slicker, more precise gear shifts to aid quick manoeuvres and overtakes.

The EcoBoost engine has been recognized as a performance leader world over and has won International Engine of the Year Award consecutively for six years in a row.

EcoSport S with Sun-roof is also offered with Ford’s trusted 1.5L TDCi diesel motor that delivers best-in-class 100 PS peak power and an outstanding fuel economy of 23 km/l.

This new variant will offer Ford’s best-in-class in-car connectivity system SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen. It will also continue to maintain Ford’s lead in safety with six airbags for all-around protection of occupants.

Signature Edition

The fun associated with Sunroof will not just be limited to EcoSport S but also on the new Signature Edition. Strengthening the petrol offering, EcoSport Signature Edition will come paired to the 1.5L three-cylinder TiVCT petrol engine that delivers 123 PS of power and a fuel efficiency of 17 km/l along with the trusted 1.5L TDCi diesel engine.

An amalgamation of style and substance, the EcoSport Signature Edition will offer Ford compact SUV’s renowned performance credentials, with subtle design enhancements in perfect harmony.

Signature Edition’s exteriors feature a series of changes to enhance the EcoSport’s visual appeal. It features a more imposing grille with chrome surround and Diamond cut 17” alloys, black fog-lamp bezel along with all round graphics, rear spoiler and roof rails.

“Signature Edition further enhances the value for money proposition of the EcoSport with the introduction of sunroof and a host of exterior & interior changes that customers have been looking for,” Mehrotra added.

Its interiors will have subtle use of blue accents on seat stitching, centre console and instrument panel to add to its overall appeal. Customers can opt to buy the EcoSport Signature Edition as an option pack on the car’s Titanium variant.
